Building Bridges Across Cultures Project

from Carol Levers
Pittsburg State University is excited to announce an upcoming scholarship opportunity, the Building Bridges Across Cultures: Meeting the Information Needs of the Hispanic Community grant project. This project is funded by the IMLS for teachers interested in becoming a school librarian. Your school district was one of 22 identified by the grant as eligible to participate in this project.

Twenty-five teachers will be selected and will receive full tuition, fees, books, laptop, and other resources to help complete the Master of Science in Educational Technology with a Library Media emphasis through Pittsburg State University. The project commences with a JumpStart program in the fall of 2019, and online courses begin in January, 2020. One mandatory on campus meeting will be held Monday, October 21 from 5:30 ???7:00 p.m. All other parts of the program will be online. Most elements will be asynchronous so participants can access them as time allows. However, there may be some events that require an online conference meeting via Zoom, or another virtual meeting application. There will be a time before courses begin (JumpStart) that immerse participants in the Hispanic culture and Culturally Relevant Teaching practices. Then there are 6 semesters of course work, including 2 summers. At the end of the course work (final semester) and for another 6 months, there will be leadership activities that participants will be expected to engage in.

Attached is a flyer with information on how to apply for this scholarship opportunity.

Applications are due by 1:00 p.m., September 1.

Questions about the grant project and scholarship application can be addressed to:

Dr. Michelle Hudiburg
Dr. Liz Mascher

Kindergarten Readiness Assessment

from David Rand
Greetings,

The window for the fall Kindergarten Readiness Assessment is now open and runs through Friday, September 6th; scores will be due via an excel spreadsheet by Friday, September 13th. You will receive the collection spreadsheet from Samantha Bradshaw via e-mail. Please see the attached administration guide for the assessment, which is required for all incoming kindergarten students. A student is considered ‘kindergarten ready’ if they are scored as a ‘yes’ on at least 20 of the 23 indicators measured. If you have any questions or need any additional information, please contact David Rand in DERA (david.rand@kckps.org). Thank you very much!!!!!!

Ages and Stages Questionnaires (ASQ)

from David Rand
Greetings,

The window for the ASQ is currently open and will close on September 20th. Last year Tom Sowers and Tracy Smith supported ASQ, but they are both now in new roles. As a result, support for ASQ will be a collaborative effort between DERA and the IIOs.

Your students from last year have been archived and your new students were uploaded prior to the first day of school. We will do another upload of current enrollments by the end of the week; after that, each school will be responsible for adding new students to the system.

All staff members coordinating ASQ at their building will need to review the documents at the following linked page, which has detailed information regarding training and preparation for administration.
https://tinyurl.com/KCKPSASQHyperDoc

Additional information regarding ASQ can also be found at the following link.
https://tinyurl.com/KCKPSASQItems

In addition, the state is providing a webinar on Friday, August 16th at 11:00 that will include support personnel from ASQ. You will be able to access the webinar by going to the following link.
http://ksde-tasn.adobeconnect.com/kansas-earlychildhood/

If you have any questions regarding training for staff, logistics of planning or scheduling interpreters, please reach out to your IIO for support. If you have any questions regarding the ASQ website, updating program administrators on the website or adding student accounts, please contact Benjamin Price in DERA (benjamin.price@kckps.org). Thank you very much!!!!!
