Special Education Staff Resignations & Recommendations for Hire

From Michelle Colvin
All resignations from special education staff need to be emailed to Michelle Colvin. Michelle will complete the ATF since special education staff is paid out of a special education budget. Also, please cc: Michelle Colvin when recommendations for hire are made for Special Education Staff. This will enable her to keep track as vacancies are filled. Please call Michelle at (913) 627-2614 or email her at michelle.colvin@kckps.org if you have any questions. Thanks for your assistance.

ESI & De-escalation

From Michelle Colvin
Make sure all staff in your building receive training on De-escalation and ESI; also make sure staff know where to access the ESI forms and how to complete them.
De-escalation Techniques PowerPoint: http://ksdetasn.org/resources/892
ESI Webinar is available on KSDE website: http://ksdetasn.org/resources/411
ESI PowerPoint without voiceover: http://ksdetasn.org/resources/410
Once all staff (including secretaries, custodians, etc.) have seen both the De-escalation & Emergency Safety Interventions webinar, please email or send the blue sheet to Michelle Colvin.

Also, if students in your building are being secluded and/or restrained, please scan and email the seclusion & restraint documentation to Michelle Colvin monthly as the Special Education Team will review the data and, if necessary, meet with the school team to determine alternative interventions to ESI. Please call Michelle at 627-2614 or email at michelle.colvin@kckps.org if you have any questions. Thanks for your prompt attention to insuring that staff receive the information in these mandatory trainings. Thanks also for sending the required documentation to Michelle at the end of the month when seclusion and/or restraint is used.

Social Work Services

From Michelle Colvin
This year there will be some changes to counseling services and social work duties and services. The changes outlined will be in place for students in early childhood settings through middle school. The changes will not affect high school through age twenty-one.

Counseling Services will be delivered by the special education teacher except for students receiving counseling services in center-based classrooms. Center-based classrooms include lifeskills, intensive support, STEPS, and ED.

We will begin identifying students as being eligible for social work services, rather than counseling services. Some students may continue to have counseling services on their IEP, but those students??? counseling services will be provided by the special education teacher.

Social workers will be using an eligibility procedure based on multi-tiered systems of support.

Social workers will be begin consulting with special education teachers immediately to assist teachers in planning and implementing counseling services. Social workers will be in contact with special education teachers this week to set a time to discuss students with counseling services.

The attached FAQ document should help clarify the social workers??? role with counseling services and their continued role in identification.

Thank you for your support as we align the provision of social work services with evidence-based practices.

Grant Procedures Reminder

From Amanda Chavez
As we start a new school year, I wanted to remind Administrators and Staff about the information listed under the Grants Department Page on the Staff Intranet. On this page you will find approval forms for new grant applications along with donation and online fundraising procedures. New this year, I have listed current grant opportunities for teachers. Opportunities will be listed as they become available. Please remember that all teachers, staff, and departments should submit the appropriate Grants Approval Form when applying for a new grant opportunity or when partnering with a community organization on a grant opportunity. The grant approval forms allow us to successfully build a database to track the proposals and requests for donations that are submitted by our school district. Your help and cooperation with this is greatly appreciated. Please feel free to call me or e-mail me with any questions, Amanda.Chavez@kckps.org or 279-2237.

5th Grade Math in Careers Experience

From Matthew Andersen

Elementary curriculum is exploring an opportunity for 5th grade students to experience mathematics in a real-life career setting. We are looking for 5th grade teachers that would like to help us explore this idea of providing elementary students with opportunities to engage in academic content through authentic experiences and real-life careers as a foundation prior to middle school. Please share this link with your 5th grade teachers.

Meal Applications

From Josh Mathiasmeier
Please assist Nutritional Services and the district in having each student turn in a meal application. In order for us to be able to continue offer free meals to our community, we must be able to collect this information each year. Cafeteria staff and Nutritional Services staff are able to run reports on who has and hasn’t turn in a meal application. If you have questions, please contact your cafeteria manager or the Nutritional Services office at 627-3900. Thanks for your support to ensure that free meals continue for years to come!
