ESL MAP Testing

From Kristen Scott
Secondary administrators,

Please allow your ESL teachers to give the winter MAP to their classes so they may have data to monitor their building plan.
If you have any questions or concerns please let me know. Thank you.

ESL December Professional Learning

From Kristen Scott
We will pull the EC5 ESL staff on Wednesday afternoon, December 16th from 1:00 to 3:30 here at the Central Office. This will allow the ESL staff to remain with their building on December 18th.
Please forward this information to your ESL staff. Thank you.

Sales Tax on District Purchasing Cards

From Bob Young
Administrators using District Purchasing Cards for the purchase of goods and services need to make sure that sales tax is not being charged as a part of the transaction. The District’s Sales Tax and Use Entity Exemption number is printed on the Purchasing Card for your reference at the time of the transaction. If a hard copy of the document is required by the vendor, the Purhcasing Department can email or fax this document in a very short time.

If you fail to require this exemption at the time of purchase, you will be asked by the Accounts Payable Department (in writing) to solicit a refund from the vendor at the time of payment of your Visa statement. You will be allowed thirty (30) days to resolve this matter. This can been done by contacting the vendor and providing them the information to make the correction and credit your account or, as the card holder, you may reimburse the District for the sales tax charges. This can be handled in the form of a personal check, cashier’s check, or money order. If you have not resolved the matter by the end of the thirty day time frame, your District Purchasing Card will be inactivated.

This may often not be a large amount of money, but it is reviewed and cited by our Auditors when it occurs. Thank you for your help and cooperation with this matter.

Spring 2015 Student State Assessment Reports

From David Rand
Between now and Thanksgiving break, schools should be receiving printed copies of last spring’s ELA and Math individual student state assessment reports through inter-office mail. Please distribute these reports to parents prior to winter break in the manner that will best ensure the reports make it home. The reports that you receive will be based on your current school year enrollment as of the end of October so you should have very few reports for students that are not in your building this year. We are currently working on a student report in Spanish and will provide those to buildings as soon as they are ready. Please note that these reports were created by the district in an attempt to make them more parent friendly and will look different that student reports you may have accessed in the KITE Educator Portal. If you have any questions regarding these reports, please contact David Rand in DERA. Thank you very much!

ESOL Sit Addendum

From Valerie Anzicek
This is a reminder of an ESOL SIT Addendum to be utilized when an ESOL student is being referred to the SIT process.
The ESOL SIT Addendum is comprised of the following:
1) ESOL SIT Addendum Flowchart
2) ESOL Addendum to the SIT Process Steps
3) Parent/Caregiver Interview Overview
4) Parent/Caregiver Interview Questions
5) KCKPS English Language Proficiency Level Descriptors
6) Sequential Second Language Acquisition Checklist Overview
7) Sequential Second Language Acquisition Checklist
8) Factors to consider to determine if delays are due to learning a second language or due to a possible disability
9) Misconceptions and current thinking about second language acquisitions
The ESOL Addendum to the SIT Process is outlined on Page 1 and comprehensively consists of:
A) Prior to the SIT meeting, setting up translation/interpreter services if needed, the classroom teacher, ESL teacher, and parent completing the Parent/Caregiver Interview. Identifying the student???s language proficiency level utilizing the ELP Level Descriptors. Completing the appropriate Sequential Second Language Acquisition Checklist.
B) Throughout the SIT Process, the SIT team will review building required documentation as well as the information listed in Part A above. Documenting interventions and progress, along with reevaluating the Sequential Second Language Acquisition Checklist.

*For explicit instructions on the ESOL Addendum to the SIT Process please see page 1 of the ESOL SIT Addendum.
It is paramount that an ESOL team member from the building as well as parents be included as a part of the SIT team for any ESL student. Translation/Interpreter services can be set up through Student Services.
