Tom??s loves stories. As the young son of migrant farm workers, he spends the summer with his family following the crops north from Texas to Iowa, passing long days in the fields listening to his grandfather tell stories. When a chance encounter brings him to the local Carnegie Library, he meets the ???Library Lady??? who recognizes his thirst for knowledge and encourages him to read. By the end of the story, Tom??s has great pride in becoming his family???s new storyteller, the guidance of a colorful mentor, and a lifelong love of reading.
A bilingual musical based on the beloved book about the true story of the Mexican-American author and educator Tom??s Rivera, who became the first minority Chancellor in the University of California system.

KCKPS Social-Emotional Character Resource Guide
From Sean DeMaree
To help us begin the work of teaching our students to be socially and emotionally prepared and successful we have created The KCKPS Social-Emotional Character Resource Guide. This teaching guide organizes the three SECD Development Standards, the six building block standards, all twelve KCKPS Code of Conduct Expectations, and alignment to our college and career readiness standards and provides multiple lesson examples for each of the building block standards. In order to better understand this document, a video module has been created. Please plan on presenting this short video (12 minutes total) to your staff, and then providing them with the link to their specific SECD Resource Guide. Throughout this year there will be additional modules to help teachers and staff interact and utilize this new resource.

Website Auditing
From Mike Keener
In an effort to help catalog the existing information we have on the public website, and also in the interest of keeping the site as up-to-date as possible, the Communications and Marketing Department is conducting a quality control audit of the public school district site, as well as making any and all changes possible to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of the site???s content. In order to expedite this, the Communications and Marketing Team needs the administrators of departments with pages on the public site to inform us of any changes that need to be made. These could be date-based changes, personnel changes, or program changes. In order to expedite this, a sitemap has been created to usefor quick reference. In the coming weeks, the web/graphic design specialist will be contacting departments as needed when he review pages.
If you know your department has pages on the public site (including, but not limited to, Student Services, Student Health, Special Education, Early Childhood, ESOL, Curriculum and Instruction, and Human Resources), please take a look at the sitemap and let us know what needs to be updated, and send Mike Keener the new information as soon as possible. Anything not updated by the time the new public site is due to be launch will not initially be included on the new site.
You can find the sitemap here:
