Substitute Time Reporting

Substitutes will automatically be paid for the time in the system for the job that they accept. If a substitute arrives late or leaves early the time is to be changed for the job time in Subfinder. Failure to do so results in payment of time not worked. This should be monitored through your time in/out sheet.

As an example, a substitute has no students the last hour of the day. He/she signs out at 3:30 but actually leaves at 2:30.

Please share this expectation with those others responsible for substitute processing.

Student Teachers

If you have a student teacher who is currently in your building who you feel would be an excellent teacher candidate for our district, please forward their name and grade level/subject area to your Human Resources director by Friday, October 9.

We will begin talking with these individuals to secure them as potential teachers in our district for second semester as well as the 2016-2017 school year.

Update on Pinnacle Grading

This is a copy of an email that will be sent to your teachers.

Grades for the elementary report cards are to be submitted by 5:00 pm on October 9. At that time, report cards will be downloaded and verified before being sent to the printer.

Scores on the report card should be based on where students should be at this point in the year in achievement of the standards, not on where the students should be by the end of the year.

During this first quarter, the GVC (pacing) guides show that all not all standards (and as a result not all domains) have been addressed. If the standards of a domain have not been addressed, then it is inappropriate to enter a score for that domain and it should be left blank. (The Pinnacle system will automatically populate blank domains with NA???do not enter anything.)

It is important that you complete all areas of the report card for which you are responsible. Any blanks will automatically be filled with NA at the domain level (which is what appears on the report cards). Remembering to complete the three areas listed below before finalizing your report cards will provide a clearer picture for parents.

1. EFFORT–Effort has to be completed for ALL Content areas. An NA in effort is not appropriate. You have to enter Effort through the Domain section of EACH CONTENT TAB in the grade book. Using the drop down menu within a specific content, change it from Assignments to Learning Standards???Domain. The effort column is the last one listed in the domain area. Symbols or numbers may used in the following scale:

??? + or 2 Above the expected amount of effort
??? = or 1 Expected amount of effort
??? – or 0 More Effort is needed
??? If you enter numbers, the system will convert them to the appropriate symbol.
??? The number 3 is not used in the effort scale.

2. BEHAVIOR–Behavior has to be completed by the Homeroom Teacher of the student. An NA in any behavior area is not appropriate. You have to enter Behavior through the Domain section of the 1(Y) Homeroom Tab in the grade book. Using the drop down menu within a 1(Y) Homeroom, change it from Assignments to Learning Standards???Domain. There are six areas that are to be completed using the following scale:

??? = or 1 Expected amount of effort
??? – or 0 More Effort is needed
??? If you enter numbers, the system will convert them to the appropriate symbol.

Submitting Student Samples of Performance Tasks

We wanted to provide more information about submitting copies of student samples from the Performance Tasks for this year. The purpose of this collection is to provide annotated exemplars for teacher use. The annotations highlight specific criteria established within the scoring key. The exemplars represent a point in time, showing varieties of authentic student thinking in response to content specific prompts.

Like last year, after each Performance Task (not including Letter ID & Modified Sentence Dictations), classroom teachers will submit copies of two student samples along with a cover page (linked in the Pacing Guides). Selected samples must Meet the Expectations of the Performance Task in the Content column, as well as in at least two of the other three columns.

This year, schools will need to determine their own process for collecting and submitting student samples. Hard copies of these student samples should be sent to the Curriculum Department (Math: Attn-Amanda Kain, SS/ELA and Science: Attn-Teri Fulton. As an alternative this year, samples can be submitted electronically instead of hard copy. Links to submit the samples electronically are included on the cover page (linked in the Pacing Guides).

For your convenience, the link below provides an overview of the Performance Tasks for Administrators and Teacher Leaders. The intention of this document is to provide those outside the day-to-day instruction and planning with the same information teachers are seeing embedded in their Pacing Guides. Teachers will continue to access the same information via the GVC-Pacing Guides so that Performance Tasks remain in the context of the units of study.

By Joint Resolution the Kansas State Board of Education and the Kansas State Senate have designated the first full week in October as Anti-Bullying Awareness Week. KSDE joins all Kansas schools in observing this week as an opportunity to create awareness and address the harm that bullying creates.

I am writing to let you know that Chief Rick Armstrong, who has been the KCKPS Police Department Chief since February, 2014, will be leaving the district at the end of December to assume the job of President and Chief Executive Officer of the Kansas City Metropolitan Crime Commission. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Chief Armstrong for his leadership in establishing the KCKPS Police Department, and for his willingness to provide support as we transition to new department leadership.

The Kansas City Metropolitan Crime Commission is a non-profit citizen’s organization that works to benefit the entire community, uniting volunteer business and civic leaders from across the Kansas City metropolitan area with a common goal of fighting crime. This new position will offer Chief Armstrong the opportunity to impact the lives of the more than 2 million people in the Kansas City Metropolitan Area, including the more than 220,000 school-aged children who live here.

During his tenure in the district, Chief Armstrong has established a first-rate police department, with a focus on the safety of students, staff and the community, but also on developing relationships with students, and leveraging those relationships to support students in their work to graduate prepared for college and careers in a global society. This work is much farther along than we could ever have expected, and I am confident that it will continue unimpeded as we transition to new department leadership.

During the next three months, I will work together with Chief Armstrong, the officers and leadership in the KCKPS Police Department, and you, the system???s leaders, to establish the vision for the qualities that the next leader of the department will need to possess. I am confident that we will be able to negotiate this transition smoothly, while continuing the work that has already drawn significant notice from school districts and police departments across the country.

Again, Chief Armstrong will be with us until the end of the year. I know that you will find the opportunity over the next few months to wish the Chief well in his new position.
