ILPs for EL Students

from Kristen Scott
Principals,
Just wanted to update you on this compliance item for all EL students. All that is required by the state at the end of the year on ILPs is to log their current KELPA scores.
Our plan is to have this information automatically populated on the ILP once we receive the scores in May. Thus, your staff will not have to do anything with ILPs at the end of the year!
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out to me. Thank you.

Classroom Libraries

from Kristi Chalk

It???s that time of year. Spring is here, and with that comes the opportunity to think about reorganizing many classroom items, resources, and materials. Questions have recently started to surface concerning the management of classroom libraries. Here are a few suggestions when thinking about how to preserve, repurpose, and purge the literature that is available to our young readers:

Old books or no books?
Consider the condition of the books in the classroom library and whether or not they still hold interest for young readers. If books are gently used, and students are still engaging with them, devise a plan with a content PLC or a grade level team to decide what might work best. Students might be interested in a particular series or genre. Individual teachers might also formulate a plan for what types of books their students might want to have access to. Give yourself (and teachers) the permission to reshuffle and redistribute, based on what works best for your building needs.

Time to Purge?
Whether keeping books or redistributing them, remember that the goal of the classroom library is to cultivate the love of reading and continue to foster habits of good, independent readers. Here are more specific examples of how classroom libraries could be redistributed (not a complete list): ?? Offer books at a parent night or a school event.

  • Consider offering books as prizes for students.
  • Consider individual student interests. Most students would welcome the opportunity to select specific books that they could hold onto. Let students choose the books they would like to take home.
  • More specifically, ELA teachers might be inspired and energized to organize books for literature circles.

To summarize, sites should consider the condition of the books and interest level for use in the building in whatever capacity the site chooses. It is highly encouraged that the books selected, which are not remaining in the building, should be offered to students/families before discarding them. Any books that are in poor condition should be discarded. It is important to note as well that books which are given away will not be replenished.

“. . . remember why we build classroom libraries in the first place: so our students will fall in love with reading and find the right book at the right time. We cannot offer our students meaningful book access with damaged, outdated, or uninteresting materials.”
